What to pack when you overland Africa

It’s official, after spending two months in Cape Town we have purchased a Toyota Landcruiser and we’re currently driving across Africa! Don’t ask us about all of the logistics, a lot of it we are making up as we go along. It’s just what we do – don’t judge. We dabbled with the idea of taking public transport from Cape Town. Which, would make for some pretty incredible stories. However, we are traveling with a lot of expensive gear and would prefer to have the freedom of our own car especially in the most remote parts of Africa. We spent months planning … Read More

The Perfect African Honeymoon

First things first – Cameron and I are not married, nor are we engaged. However, given that we are a traveling couple in our mid-twenties we get asked quite a bit about honeymoon destinations. The question “where would you recommend for our honeymoon?” pops up in our inbox often and we love shedding light on the subject. Many North Americans turn to the Caribbean or Europe given the close proximity to North America. For similar reasons, Australians may turn to Southeast Asia for the perfect getaway. These continents are fantastic! We love sipping cappuccinos in Italy, dancing through the streets … Read More

Buying a car in South Africa

So the big announcement is out! We are officially driving across Africa in “Charlie,” our newest addition to The World Pursuit family. The 1989 Land Cruiser is awesome! He is a workhorse, a 4×4 Tonka trunk equipped with a bush bar, roof rack, and pull out drawers. Like others, you may be wondering what he cost so let’s just get how much the cost out of the way. Charlie cost us a whopping 60,000 ZAR or about $4300 USD.  Never mind the cost, though. What was more of the issue were two Americans trying to buy a car in South Africa. I … Read More

I want to Travel the World

We just crossed the border from South Africa over to Namibia. I am over the moon with excitement for what this trip through the Namibian desert will bring. However, it is also a milestone for me because I have now set foot in and traveled through 50 countries! I know that numbers don’t matter and many travelers choose not to “count countries”, but I have always found that setting a goal pushes me to actually do something. Long ago, I told myself I would see the world. Having traveled to 50 countries I have now been in more than 25% of the … Read More

What to wear on Safari

Safari clothing is a pretty serious affair in Africa we have come to find. Yes, it is a bit “old fashioned,” but some fashions never die. Unlike, certain parts of the world you won’t be laughed at for showing up in all khaki. In fact, there is even a South African brand called Khaki Fever that specializes in all khaki garments.  We’ve been in Africa going on three months now and have already been on more than a few “safaris,” but the best has yet to come. Over the course of the next six months, we’ll be on safari in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, … Read More

Holidays in Mozambique

Strangers and friends often ask about our favorite destinations from our experiences traveling around the world. It’s a question that is always difficult, and we won’t ever have an answer, but there are countries and places that stand out. Mozambique is a standout. It was a highlight of the first section of our tour through Southern Africa and our travels so far. Yes, traveling to the middle of nowhere was a bigger highlight for us than visiting Venice. For us, it was a holiday in Mozambique because we felt we were able to disconnect from our digital world. It was the experience in Mozambique … Read More

Beautiful Mozambique

Mozambique was a country we knew little about. We vaguely knew about the brutal civil war not so long ago, the beautiful coastline, and even that there were giant prawns to be eaten. We were about to give it a skip due to the difficulty of travel, but decided we just had to go where very few that we knew had traveled. What was found was more than we could have ever hoped for. Genuine people, a laid back atmosphere, delicious seafood, and vibrant coastal towns were just the beginnings of our entrancement with Mozambique. In this South African nation … Read More
