Our third year of blogging was a year of great financial growth, that means seeking new ways to manage our finances. We’ve talked in the past about how managing our finances while traveling is crucial to a successful trip and allows for more amazing trips in the future.
That not only means saving money for travel, but also using smart savings and investment strategies. This past month while we’ve sought new resources and are trying to be wiser with the money we have coming in. Just recently we found out about COIN.
COIN is an online investment portfolio tool that allows you to consciously invest your money. They offer a collection of curated portfolios that allow for customers to select impact areas that can include sustainable development goals such as Climate Action, Clean Water, and Waste Reduction.
It’s only natural as travelers that we come face to face with the many challenges that face the world. We are often confronted with the effects of climate change, poverty, and inequality in the world head on and we are constantly seeking new ways to have a positive impact on our world.
What is COIN? • Socially Conscious Investing
COIN is a newly launched platform for cause-driven investment. Through the online platform and mobile tool, it gives you the power to invest in companies that are making a difference in key areas.
Key areas for investment through COIN are Gender Equality, Climate Action, Better Health, Clean Water, Reduce Waste, Quality Work, Modern Cities, and Shared Prosperity.
It uses a complex methodology to rank the companies so that your investment can have the greatest impact. Upon opening an account customers may select up to three impact areas that align with their values.
We’ve previously spoken about encouraging sustainable travel and combating over tourism by using our dollars to create an impact. This is a similar scenario through investing wisely. We are firm believers that if we want to have a lasting impact on the world we have to provide more than a charitable donation, we have to actually choose to live a more sustainable and conscious way. In the world of travel bloggers, this has everything to do with sustainable travel!
Investing in Sustainable Tourism
Many of the key areas of investment are directly related to sustainable travel and what we value in our world. Anyone who’s an active traveler and has spent a significant amount of time outdoors can speak to the issue of climate change.
There have been a lot of moments in our travels when the effects of mankind have left us depressed. Things like plastic on the beaches of the Mediterranean, bleached coral in the Seychelles, and a poached elephant on the border of Kenya and Tanzania have all been low points in our travels. We see many negatives to travel such as over development, pollution, and environmental degradation that have honestly discouraged us to keep traveling at points.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
Everything starts with those first steps, we’ve taken numerous steps towards sustainability over the years and we continue to find new ways to enhance our travels sustainably. A great area to start for conscious travelers is a smart investment strategy. You can take three of the impact areas on offer with the COIN Investment tools. The three areas that overlap with sustainable travel and for us would be Climate Action, Reduce Waste, and Shared Prosperity.
In our opinion, a smart investment strategy is one of the clearest ways to make a positive impact. It’s as simple as online banking and has the potential of a nice return on investment outside of those warm feelings you get by supporting a cause.
You Can Make a Difference
We believe travel can be a force for good. It has the ability to change traveler’s concept of the world while empowering local communities and preserving the environment for future generations. If we all find our platform we can be the change we want to see.
A great way to make the world a better place is to support the right initiatives when traveling and even throughout your daily lives. This means choosing to spend your money with ethical tour companies, purchase from small vendors, and support local communities.
That can extend to investments in companies and business that align with your values at home too. We hope to see more tools like this in the future and create more good for our planet and people.
