Staying at the Alila Fort Bishangarh (Rajasthan): Hotel Review

Alila Fort Bishangarh

Nestled amidst the rugged terrain of Rajasthan, the Alila Fort Bishangarh stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and architectural marvels. This majestic 232-year-old warrior fort-turned-luxury-hotel seamlessly blends the grandeur of the past with modern luxury, offering guests a unique and unforgettable experience overlooking the majestic Aravalli Mountains.

A Glimpse into History

 Alila Fort Bishangarh

Built in the 18th century, the Alila Fort Bishangarh served as a defensive fortress for the royal family of Bishangarh. The architectural prowess of the fort is evident in its sturdy walls, turrets, and sprawling courtyards. The restoration of this historic gem by the Alila Hotels and Resorts has preserved its cultural heritage while transforming it into a haven of opulence.

Accommodation at the Fort

The Alila Fort Bishangarh boasts 59 royally decorated rooms and suites that perfectly blend heritage charm and contemporary comfort. Each room offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of Rajasthan. The interiors are adorned with traditional Rajasthani decor, showcasing intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail.

We were upgraded to the Royal category and it was something else! It had its own chill spot, and a beautiful window overlooking the valley. However the most impressive part of the massive room had to be the huge circular bathtub right smack in the middle – a go-to spot for honeymooners.

Dining in Elegance

The culinary experience at Alila Fort Bishangarh is a journey through the flavors of Rajasthan as there are four multicuisine restaurants. The hotel’s restaurants offer a delectable array of local and international cuisines, prepared with the finest ingredients. Guests can savor traditional Rajasthani dishes while enjoying the regal ambiance of the dining spaces.

Our favorite restaurant was easily Nazaara, on the roof of the fort, the chefs here create a spectacular Indian buffet every night. Dining under the stars with traditional music playing trying all the Rajasthani food was the highlight of our stay. Other restaurants are Amarsar inside the fort, and Haveli, a poolside restaurant. However, the Alila offers special experiences where guests can dine privately by the pool.

Wellness and Relaxation

For those seeking relaxation, the Alila Spa provides a haven of tranquility. Set against the backdrop of the Aravalli hills, the spa offers a range of rejuvenating treatments and wellness therapies inspired by ancient Indian healing traditions. Guests can unwind in the lap of luxury, surrounded by the serenity of the fort’s historic walls.

When you’re not busy exploring the area, one of the best things to do is relax at the Alila infinity pool, with amazing views out to the lush forest and to the fort itself. Nearby is also a well equipped fitness center, and a play center for the younger guests.

Exploring the Surroundings

The Alila Fort Bishangarh serves as an ideal base for exploring the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan. Guests can embark on guided tours to nearby attractions, including ancient temples, bustling markets, and the vibrant city of Jaipur. The hotel also offers unique experiences such as hot air balloon rides, allowing guests to witness the breathtaking landscapes from above. We were also able to enjoy a cultural tour of Bishangarh, and see what daily life there is like. This included watching local pottery makers, carpet makers, and jewelers.

Sustainable Luxury

Alila Hotels and Resorts are renowned for their commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism. Alila Fort Bishangarh is no exception, with initiatives aimed at preserving the local environment and supporting the surrounding communities. Guests can enjoy a guilt-free luxury experience, knowing that their stay contributes to the conservation of Rajasthan’s cultural and natural heritage.

Is Staying at the Alila Fort Bishangarh Worth It?

This hotel in India stands out as truly unique. It’s the only warrior fort-turned-hotel in the country, and let me tell you, the transformation wasn’t a walk in the park. It took a solid 10 years to restore and convert the fortress into a hotel. Given its imposing structure with maze-like hallways and eight-foot-thick walls, one might expect a dark and foreboding atmosphere. However, the end result is surprisingly light, airy, and contemporary.

Despite maintaining many original features and details, the overall ambiance is far from what you’d expect in such a historical setting. Located in the renowned Aravalli Hills near Jaipur, it’s also more accessible than most of Rajasthan’s remote palace hotels, making it a convenient addition to any Golden Triangle itinerary.
