Besides Independence Day, July is filled with festivals and events across the US. From celebrations to music festivals, there’s something for everyone. With plenty of amazing places to visit in July in the US, and many Americans take time off work during the month, expect crowds and high prices. While that may sound like a bummer, the upside is that many tourist destinations and attractions will be livelier and more active.
Whether you want to enjoy the Sequoias in California, hike with the grizzlies in Alaska, or smell the wildflowers in the Rocky Mountains, July is an ideal month. No matter if you’re traveling with the kids, with your lover, with the parents, or with your friends there are plenty of places to visit in July in the US. Let’s dig into a few of our favorites!
The Best Places to Visit in July in the US
1. Ann Arbor, Michigan
One of the best places to visit in Michigan, is the vibrant city of Ann Arbor, home to the University of Michigan. During the fall, winter, and spring, Ann Arbor is a college town, but come July, most of those students are gone home, and there’s more room to explore without the crowds.
This is the time of year when the weather is also very nice with temps floating in the 80s! These warm temperatures are perfect for exploring the historic downtown area with its quaint shops and trendy cafes. We love hiking along the Huron River Water Trail on a sunny day.
Ann Arbor is also known for its vibrant arts scene, which is showcased in the many galleries, theatres, museums and at the Ann Arbor Art Fair which takes place in July.
2. New Braunfels, Texas
One of the best places to visit in July in the US, is this one that you may have never thought about. Situated along the Guadalupe River in the scenic Texas Hill Country region, New Braunfels is an amazing place to visit in July. That’s if you like heat, that is, as temps hover around 95°F. It’s the perfect time to enjoy many activities on the water.
Go tubing down the river or spend a day at Schlitterbahn’s Waterpark Resort, where you’ll find one of the longest water coasters in the world. Go hiking or biking before the heat of the day, along the trails maintained by the New Braunfels Conservation Society. Into German architecture from the 1800s? Then, explore the Gruene Historic District (pronounced “green”), where you can shop, dine, and dance within the walls of the original township buildings. This is where cotton farmers from Germany lived with roots during pre-Civil War times, and nowadays, that means it’s an interesting area to spend evenings strolling the town and indulging in traditional German culture and cuisine!
3. Lake Chelan, Washington
Even in July, when many places are seeing peak-season crowds, Lake Chelan is a peaceful and beautiful place to enjoy an escape from everyday monotony. The lake is quite large and surrounded by the pristine wilderness of the Wenatchee National Forest.
Enjoy nice temperatures that reach between 80 and 88°F as you hike in Twenty-Five Mile State Park and nearby Northern Cascades National Park, relax on remote beaches, beat the heat at Slidewaters Water Park and go ziplining at High Trek Chelan.
4. Fredericksburg, Texas
If you’re looking for a place with a fascinating history, beautiful Victorian architecture, and a down-home feel, Fredericksburg is a fantastic place to visit in July. This is when the temperatures are steady, around 92°F, and the sun shines most days.
Visit the Pioneer Museum and learn about the city’s German heritage, sample local wines at the many wineries around the area and enjoy the great outdoors at the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.
In July, the peaches are ripe, and Fredericksburg is well known for their juicy peaches, so be sure to try some from one of the farmers markets or roadside stands. Better yet, plan your trip around the annual Fredericksburg Peach Festival.
5. Dauphin Island, Alabama
Out-of-the-way, virtually unknown, but still one of the most beautiful beaches in the US. That’s Dauphin Island any time of year. In July, this Alabama gem is still an uncrowded beach paradise with warm temperatures and plenty of sun.
Get a history lesson at Fort Gaines, kayak in the sparkling bay, feast on seafood fresh off the docks, visit the Alabama Aquarium and go birdwatching at the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. End your day with a sunset followed by a movie on the beach. In July, The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo takes place and we recommend trying to time your visit around that!
6. Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota
If you love nature and outdoor adventure, Voyageurs National Park is a fabulous place to visit in July. This remote area sees fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures this time of year so you can enjoy exploring this unique system of lakes, islands and waterways where many land areas can only be reached by boat.
See lush forests, sparkling glacier lakes and streams. On the peninsula, there are many hiking trails and the Ellsworth Rock Gardens is a must-see attraction. Come nightfall, find a spot where you can watch the night sky and catch some shooting stars!
7. Sequoia National Park, California
One of the best places to visit in July in the US is this American classic. There’s more to Sequoia National Park than giant trees, but those trees sure are something to see! Known for being some of the biggest and oldest trees on earth, the weather is perfect for exploring the surrounding wilderness area in July.
This is also when the rivers are at their peak and the trees and meadows are lush and green. Learn about the park and its famed giant sequoias at the Giant Forest Museum and then hike to Moro Rock and enjoy the spectacular views. In July, we recommend visitors explore Crystal Cave and admire General Sherman, the giant tree that is thought to be over 2,000 years old.
8. Alaska
There’s no specific place in Alaska that’s better to visit in July because, as a whole, all of Alaska is pretty great that time of year! We find it one of the best places to visit in July in the world! The temperatures are warming up, the days are getting longer and wildlife is on the move.
This is the prettiest time of year in Alaska, and the season is short, so there’s no better time to explore this vast wilderness than in July. Go whale watching, hike in Denali National Park, admire spectacular natural wonders in Kenai Fjords National Park, look out for bears in Katmai National Park, and learn about Alaska Native Culture at the Museum of the North!
Don’t worry – you can do it all as the days are long, and you’ll barely be seeing any dark skies in July. Hope you didn’t want to sleep on vacation! In July – you’ll also enjoy several festivals including the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival and the Fly By Festival which features vintage airplanes.
9. Tybee Island, Georgia
Although it’s only 20 minutes away from bustling Savannah, Tybee Island feels like it’s a world away from the city. July is the best time to visit for warm weather to enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches and outdoor adventures.
You may even get to see some of the sea turtles that nest there this time of year! Go birdwatching along the Sally Pearce Nature Trail, search for fossils, visit the Tybee Island Light Station & Museum and enjoy scenery of rugged coastline and marshlands.
10. Ocean City, Maryland
If you dream of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean in July, head to Ocean City and you’ll get warm air and water. Here you can enjoy access to miles of sandy beaches where you can spend your days lounging in the sun.
Walk along the scenic historic boardwalk where you’ll find amusement parks, eateries and vendors, go kayaking along the coast, check out the Lifesaving Museum. At the end of the day, take in an outdoor movie on the beach as the Ocean City Rec and Parks hosts Movies on the Beach a few times a week.
11. Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Yes, it will be busy in July, but Cape Cod is also a magical place when the temperatures soar, the days are longer, and the ocean water is warm enough for swimming. Some of the most beautiful beaches and towns are situated in the region, and the history is second to none!
Cape Cod is a great place to celebrate Independence Day, and while you’re there, you might catch some of the events that happen during the annual Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival. Catch a movie at one of the drive-in theaters, learn how to surf, go whale watching, and embark on a hiking adventure along the coast.
If you opt to spend a few days in the area, it’s best to head to Provincetown, where you’ll find many galleries, shops, and restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, the seafood eateries on Cape Cod are some of the best in the country – try and get reservations at the Glass Onion if you’re celebrating a special occassoin.
12. Madison, Wisconsin
They may not be ocean beaches, but the dozen lake beaches around Madison are just as nice, and with temperatures reaching a high of 81°F, July is the best time to enjoy them!
Go for a refreshing swim in the clear waters or spend an afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding around Brittingham Beach. If being in or on the water isn’t your thing, go hiking in the Kettle Moraine State Forest and learn about local history at the Wisconsin Historical Museum.
Come evening, relax at the lakeside with a meal and live music. In July, the Sugar Maple Music Festival is a popular event featuring live music and workshops.
13. The Ozarks, Missouri
In July, you’ll experience the best weather in the Ozarks, with hot temperatures and plenty of sun. These are perfect conditions for enjoying swimming, boating, jet skiing, and other water activities at the Lake of the Ozarks State Park.
You can also enjoy hiking in Ha Ha Tonka State Park and exploring the Bridal Cave. As you explore the park, you’ll see amazing sights featuring waterfalls, forest areas and rivers.
14. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
If you’re an outdoor lover seeking a destination with warm weather and stunning landscapes with colorful wildflowers in bloom, Rocky Mountain National Park is a nature lover’s paradise! It’s easily one of the best places to visit in July in the US if you love hiking, biking, and hanging by alpine lakes.
Kayak in clear mountain lakes, enjoy views from rugged ridges, spot wildlife roaming in the open spaces and hike on amazing trails such as Bear Lake and Trail Ridge.
15. Bryson City, North Carolina
Bryson City is not really a city; in fact, it’s a very small North Carolina town situated adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In July, the weather is perfect with temperatures around 83°F, so you can comfortably explore the quaint downtown area with its galleries, bookstores, and eateries and the great outdoors, which is just outside the town.
Take a ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and enjoy the stunning mountain scenery, go white-water rafting on the Tuckasegee River, hike along parts of the famed Appalachian Trail, and visit the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians.
For a small place, there are many festivals in July, including the Freedom Fest, Cherokee Bluegrass Festival, and the Sweet Corn Festival. All provide small-town fun that is exceptionally special if you are visiting from a major city.
16. Finger Lakes, New York State
Besides beautiful lakes, there are many waterfalls in the Finger Lakes region, and they’re best enjoyed in July after the spring rains. When not chasing waterfalls or hanging out lakeside, explore the first wine region in the country, Finger Lakes Wine Country.
Temperatures often reach a comfortable 72°F, which is perfect for exploring the pretty town of Ithaca with its gardens, which are at their most beautiful in July.
Go hiking in Watkins Glen State Park or spend lazy days fishing in Seneca Lake which is known as the Lake Trout Capital of the World. Be sure to check out the Finger Lakes Wine Festival and the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival both happening in July!
17. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
When it comes to the weather in Grand Teton National Park, you’ll get the best of it in July. At 77°F this is the time of year when it’s warm enough to go swimming and kayaking in the mountain lakes, go white-water rafting in the raging rivers, and hiking on amazing trails, including Inspiration Point and Hidden Falls. You’ll also stand a good chance at spotting wildlife, so keep your eye out for bison!
18. Yachats, Oregon
In July, the temperatures in Yachats reach an average of 66°F, which is neither too hot nor too cold. Perfect weather for exploring this charming coastal town and its galleries and local shops.
Not too many people know about this place, so you won’t have to worry about crowds as you enjoy the rugged coastline, picturesque lighthouses, fascinating tide pools, and dramatic rock formations. Go hiking on the trails in the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and enjoy various outdoor activities at the Smelt Sands State Recreation Site.
19. San Juan Islands, Washington
The San Juan Islands are among some of the best places to visit in Washington. The region where the San Juan Islands are located sees its fair share of rain during the winter months. That means that come July, the islands will be lush with vegetation that will add a splash of green to the already pretty landscape. Sandy beaches, beautiful mountain scenery, abundant wildlife and, best of all it’s whale watching season.
Besides searching for orcas, biking is very popular here in the summer with mountain biking trails to rival Whistler up north. There are also plenty of places to hike including Moran State Park and Lime Kiln Point State Park. The Orcas Island Cider & Mead Festival takes place in July and features live music and, of course, plenty of cider and mead!
20. Buffalo National River, Arkansas
Founded in 1972, the Buffalo National River spans a whopping 135 miles, maintaining its unimpeded flow and standing as one of the last remaining undammed rivers in the contiguous 48 states. It’s no doubt that it is a pristine and protected area. If you are looking for a bit of peace and quiet in nature, far from the crowds of Disneyland this might be one of the best places to go in July for your taste.
Hiking on The Hawksbill Crag Trail is a popular activity in the area and the hot temperatures in July make it an amazing destination to enjoy these and many more outdoor activities. When you’re not floating on the river or hiking we recommend you check out the Peppersauce Ghost Town, go ziplining with Buffalo River Canopy Tour and explore the Mystic Caves and Crystal Dome Caverns.
21. Chicago, Illinois
With an average temperature of 82°F, Chicago’s weather in July is just right for exploring its urban wonders and attending its many festivals, including Taste of Chicago, Pitchfork Music Festival, and African/Caribbean International Festival of Life.
Some of the country’s best restaurants are in Chicago too, and in July, you can comfortably enjoy a meal on one of the many rooftops and patios. Head to the Lincoln Park Zoo, relax in one of the city’s beautiful green spaces and spend evenings enjoying some of that live Jazz music the city is known for.
22. Beavers Bend Resort Park, Oklahoma
For plenty of outdoor fun for the whole family, Beavers Bend Resort Park is a top place to spend a holiday in July for hot, sunny weather and endless adventures. The large resort is situated on Broken Bow Lake, about a four-hour drive from Oklahoma City. Far from the city crowds, this area features miles of hiking trails, swimming areas, a golf course, a steam train, and beautiful accommodations, all surrounded by scenic mountain views.
It’s the best place to be if you want to fully immerse yourself in nature. Join in on one of the campfire programs, embark on a guided nature hike and go kayaking or paddleboarding.
23. Cape May, New Jersey
Beaches and boardwalks are the top draws in the historic seaside resort town of Cape May, and both are best enjoyed in the hot, sunny weather of July. Admire the hundreds of old Victorian buildings and enjoy some of the best birdwatching on earth.
Visit world-class wineries and top attractions including the Cape May Lighthouse, The Nature Center of Cape May and The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum.
24. Carmel-by-the-sea, California
With its unique architecture and stunning white-sand beaches, Carmel-by-the-sea is considered one of the most picturesque small towns in the country and one of the best places to visit in July.
Comfortable temperatures around 65°F create conditions that are perfect for walking along the seashore, hiking on the Scenic Bluff Path, and exploring the natural wonders of Carmel River State Beach and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
The town is also known for its vibrant arts scene, which is on display at dozens of galleries, and the Carmel Mission is a top place to visit. In July, be sure to check out the Carmel Bach Festival, one of California’s oldest music festivals.
25. Outer Banks, North Carolina
The Outer Banks is a group of barrier islands located off the coast of North Carolina. The area is known for its long, sandy beaches, and in July, the ocean water warms up quite nicely! It’s the best time of the year for swimming and lying on the beach with a book in hand. Take a scenic drive along the Outer Banks Scenic Byway and stop at the pretty lighthouses and scenic viewpoints along the way.
Enjoy the warm weather that heats up to an average of 85°F with some hiking or kite-flying in Jockey Ridge State Park, and learn about a fascinating time in history with a visit to The Wright Brothers Memorial.
